5 tips for a smooth house move
Moving house is a pretty stressful time, but there are things that you can do to make your house move easier.
In this blog, we look at our five top tips we’ve come across from clients and of course our own experiences, to make your house move a smooth one.
Declutter your home
This may sound like a horrendous task but moving your unwanted items to a new house and then unpacking them is far worse! When you know you’re looking to move, start to really assess what you use in your house and what you really need.
We all have a drawer, cupboard or even room that is full of things that we never use, so start to look through these and be critical about if you use them or not. There is no need to throw things away either! There are so many charities that are looking for donations, not to mention places like Freecycle or local Facebook groups where others may be looking for just the thing that you want to sell or give away.
Pack things properly
Any house move is going to need a lot of packing materials, so start thinking about what you need to pack your different items in. If you have some precious items, you need to make sure these are wrapped properly. Making sure you have a healthy supply of bubble wrap and paper is always a must.
Also, make sure that you put the things that you are going to need straight away in labelled boxes. For example, your kettle, some mugs, tea, or coffee are likely to be needed quickly!
Things like bedding, toiletries etc may also be something you need to get your hands on sooner rather than later. Making sure you know where these are, definitely helps with the stress levels later. It may even be worth thinking about having a bag of essentials packed so you’re ready to go the morning after your move.
Pack as soon as you can
This one can be tricky, after all, not all house moves go like clockwork! We’ve heard many people who have started backing only to find their moving date has changed. However, there is still something to be said for starting to pack less used items sooner rather than later.
So, whilst you are starting your decluttering, think about how often you use an item. If it’s something that is perhaps a seasonal object that you’re not going to use for the next few months, then pack it. There are always going to be life events that crop up. So even if you give yourself a good 8 weeks to get everything packed, you may find that you’re feeling a little bit rushed at the end!
Hire a removal company
This may sound obvious, but it really does make life easier. Particularly if you are a family of four who are moving home! You may have been able to move into your first home using a van but moving to an average sized house is another thing altogether!
A professional and recommended removal company will give you more than just peace of mind. They can be as involved or as little as you want. They will also be able to give you a great idea of what size van you need, and more importantly, help you to move the heavy pieces of furniture too. Some companies even offer house moving checklists, which are going to great to keep you organised and on track.
Make sure though that you book your chosen removal team enough in advance.
Remember to redirect your mail
Once you have a definite date, you’ll feel more comfortable with thinking about starting to redirect your post etc. But it’s a really good idea to start building a list of who you’ll need to let know much earlier in the moving process. As your post comes in (or you even as you think of things) start adding them to a list.
Keep this list on something like Google Drive, then you can access it from a computer or your phone. This means you’re less likely to forget to add things to it!
Once you’re ready, you can then start ticking things off the list… which means you can work through them and be sure not to miss any.
